Guarding Midnight by Kacey Hammell eBook Giveaway

Being the hired muscle just got a whole lot harder.....

No one knows sacrifice better than former Army Sergeant Gavin Bennett. He’s witnessed firsthand the emotional, physical and mental toll of being caught in the crossfire. Being a bouncer-slash-bodyguard may not be Gavin’s dream job, but he’s willing to do just about anything to help out family. When Gavin reports for his first day of work, he quickly discovers a woman who threatens to crack his legendary cool.

Shree Walker is on the run from a dark past she tried to shut away. Battered and broken, a happily ever after doesn’t exist for her. Ready to start fresh with a new life in a new city, she is happy dancing at the Vixen Club. She’d be even happier without the presence of the prickly new bouncer who won’t let anyone or anything get past his carefully guarded defenses. He’s a distraction she doesn’t need. And a temptation she can’t resist.

When Shree is kidnapped by the criminal mastermind hell-bent on taking the club at any cost, Gavin has to make a decision. Hold tight and continue to keep Shree at arm’s length. Or break down his walls and take a chance on something more powerful than them both: Love.

Black Apple by Joan Crate Review

* I received a eARC for my honest review*

Torn from her home and delivered to St. Mark’s Residential School for Girls by government decree, young Rose Marie finds herself in an alien universe where nothing of her previous life is tolerated, not even her Blackfoot name. For she has entered into the world of the Sisters of Brotherly Love, an order of nuns dedicated to saving the Indigenous children from damnation. Life under the sharp eye of Mother Grace, the Mother General, becomes an endless series of torments, from daily recitations and obligations to chronic sickness and inedible food. And then there are the beatings. All the feisty Rose Marie wants to do is escape from St. Mark’s. How her imagination soars as she dreams about her lost family on the Reserve, finding in her visions a healing spirit that touches her heart. But all too soon she starts to see other shapes in her dreams as well, shapes that warn her of unspoken dangers and mysteries that threaten to engulf her. And she has seen the rows of plain wooden crosses behind the school, reminding her that many students have never left here alive.

Set during the Second World War and the 1950s, Black Apple is an unforgettable, vividly rendered novel about two very different women whose worlds collide: an irrepressible young Blackfoot girl whose spirit cannot be destroyed, and an aging yet powerful nun who increasingly doubts the value of her life. It captures brilliantly the strange mix of cruelty and compassion in the residential schools, where young children are forbidden to speak their own languages and given Christian names. As Rose Marie matures, she finds increasingly that she knows only the life of the nuns, with its piety, hard work and self-denial. Why is it, then, that she is haunted by secret visions—of past crimes in the school that terrify her, of her dead mother, of the Indigenous life on the plains that has long vanished? Even the kind-hearted Sister Cilla is unable to calm her fears. And then, there is a miracle, or so Mother Grace says. Now Rose is thrust back into the outside world with only her wits to save her.

MY THOUGHTS

This isn't the kind of historical fiction I usually read but it sounded interesting so I decided to give it a shot. Black Apple  started off slow but once the story picked up at around halfway into it and  I started enjoying it .

It is a very interesting read and I did enjoy it once the story picked up.

I give this 4 out of 5.

Black Apple by Joan Crate will be available in stores near you on March 1st 2016.

Inkeepers-Daughter

Book Title: Innkeeper's Daughter
Author: Dormaine G.
Genre: Romance
Release Date: March 22, 2016

book blurb
Sterling wanted to believe in his marriage; he wanted to believe that he had disappointed his wife for the last time. That might've been possible, if he hadn't met the young, beautiful and willing Hanna. This time however, he wasn't the aggressor. Yet as he allowed his heart to be captured, he knew that life would never be the same.

Sterling's trip to the mountains of Colorado leads him straight into the arms of Hanna, the Innkeeper's Daughter.
excerpt
I poured a glass of Samaroli rum and grabbed my dossier. I hadn't glanced at it since my arrival. I decided to relax on the deck and kick back on the lounge chair. As I faced the snow-coated mountains, I could not help but take in the magnificence. The scene was majestic, the sky was a midnight black with stars sprinkled about. The fragrance might've been labeled fresh-new country, if at all possible.

The deck was heated but the cool breeze that floated in mingled well, balancing the temperature. Admiring the view, I had to wonder why anyone would ever want to leave this place.

The Caribbean rum had started to take toll on me. I rested my head back and became a fixture in my environment.

There was a knock on the door. My stomach dropped; I knew exactly who it was. I didn’t yell for her to come in; she would anyway. I swiveled my chair around to watch her sashaying in through the moonlit suite.

She wore a simple, black one piece. It fit her impeccably. She didn't wear a bra to support her perky B-cup breasts as they barely bounced with each step. I imagined a thong underneath, barely covering her sacred area. She adorned red, five-inch stilettos with silver tips. Her hair was in a flirty, flyaway bun, looking every bit the runway model. She was stunning.

She stood in front of me, standing in between my legs.

What could I do? What could I say? Common sense told me one thing. My manhood told me another. I opened my mouth to speak, hoping for the right words. “You shouldn’t be here, Hanna.”

From my lips spewed one thing, even though I knew it was bull.

Hi. I’m Opal Carew and I write erotic romance for St. Martin’s Press. I’ve been writing since 1993, though originally I wrote futuristic, urban fantasy, science fiction, paranormal and contemporary romance. These stories are set in the present, future, or alternate realities and most of my stories are steamy. I am now republishing these under the name Amber Carew. As Opal Carew, I write erotic romances which always have a romance and a happy ending. So why do I like writing erotic romance? I like being able to push beyond traditional boundaries. I like dealing with a woman who is growing and evolving – questioning her sexual boundaries and pushing past them. I have been writing stories that involve multiple characters and it’s fascinating to work with the interactions between them. What fun to write a heroine choosing between two equally appealing heroes? My current project involves a group of several people who interact sexually and I find the scenario an enjoyable challenge. I try to keep my characters real. I like to have a heroine with whom the reader can empathize. These aren’t women who just jump into bed with anyone. They find themselves in an unusual situation – something exciting and erotic – but a situation where they have to push themselves beyond their comfort level. As a result, they grow as a person. So often fear holds us back – of what others will think of us, of what we will think about ourselves – and we don’t follow our hearts. These women push past that fear.
